The Jamboree Opens
"After months of
planning and foreseeing thousands of details from water supply and food to
hospitalization, transportation and excursions -- the Jamboree was officially opened by
President Walter W. Head and Dr. James E. West. Sharp at 9 A. M. cannon and air
bombs announced the raising of the flags. On the Avenue of Flags before the Camp
Chief's tent, to the tune of the appropriate music, Scouts from 24 countries raised their
own flags, as the Stars and Stripes ... took the breeze.
"At the same hour, the Stars and Stripes were hoisted in an appropriate ceremony in
each of the 20 sections of the giant camp -- and the Jamboree was "on."
"That night, when dusk had fallen as had a bit of rain, the opening campfire was held
in the big Arena. Greetings were presented from the President of the United States by the
Secretary of Commerce, Hon. Daniel C. Roper -- songs were sung. National Scout
Commissioner, Daniel Carter Beard lighted the campfire with flint and steel -- and
"Scouts from everywhere" met each other all together for the first thrill of
such a meeting -- at the base of the towering Washington Monument.
"Here Scouts, Leaders and visitors alike were touched by the sense of bigness --
bigness of the crowd, the Movement, our Nation, and the bigness of life itself."
